When We Were Magic is one of those books that you have a fuck-ton of fun reading, but when you finish it, all the things that were wrong with it start aggressively jumping at you.ĭon’t get me wrong, I basically gobbled up this story and was so compelled by everything that was happening. Their secret is what brought them together, and their love for each other is unshakeable-even when that love is complicated. Being in love with your best friend is harder.Īlexis has always been able to rely on two things: her best friends, and the magic powers they all share. And welp, I am conflicted, and here’s why.Ī moving, darkly funny novel about six teens whose magic goes wildly awry from Magic for Liars author Sarah Gailey, who Chuck Wendig calls an “author to watch.” The moment I read the opening lines of this I just knew I had to have it. However, I can’t help but reading critically and sometimes, I just finish a book and have a lot of garbled thoughts that I need to let out, which is exactly what happened with Sarah Gailey’s When We Were Magic! The entire reason why I pick up normal books is so I can read them for enjoyment. I often tend to avoid writing actual book reviews because ARC reviews are enough work for me.
